In A Nutshell

crazy and fascinating amalgamation of ancient and modern

The National Capital Territory of Delhi is an enormous sprawling city, home to the Indian Government’s executive, judiciary, and legislative authorities and around 25 million residents. The area is divided into eleven districts, each of them a crazy and fascinating amalgamation of ancient and modern. Delhi is thought to be the oldest existing city in the world. Medieval barricades stand proudly beside massive shopping malls, and colonial-era residential districts are home to mausoleums and bustling night bazaars. Delhi is polluted, crowded, and chaotic, but endlessly awe-inspiring all the same.

The River Yamuna flows by on the eastern side of Delhi, and to the west, the Aravali Hills create an arc above the city. South Delhi is affluent and upscale, with beautiful hotels and the red sandstone Qutab Minhar, towering at 72.5 metres high. You can visit Humayan’s Tomb and listen to Islamic devotional song (qawwali) in Nizzamudin. British-built New Delhi is full of broad tree-lined lanes. The Lodhi Gardens are a beautiful and peaceful way to catch a breath, particularly at dusk.

When faced with the chance to visit Old Delhi, you might need a good dose of patience and stamina, but exploring its endless winding streets and narrow alleyways can also be a delight. At the vast and impressive Red Fort, you can forget time and travel back to the splendour of the Mughal City. Wherever you go in this vast region, Delhi is easily navigated thanks to its modern and highly efficient metro system.
